Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition:Voice and Votes-Democracy in America

Last Updated 12/16/2021

Osceola was one of only six towns chosen for this exhibition and the only host town in Southern Iowa. Museums on Main Street offers small towns a free, Smithsonian experience. This exhibit could not be more timely as it arrives in the middle of a presidential election.

The images, words and debates of the Founding Fathers reveal their vision of democracy in America. “The founders believed democracy demands action, reaction, vision, and revision as we continue to question how to form “a more perfect union. How do you participate as a citizen? From the revolution and suffrage, to civil rights and casting ballots, everyone in every community is part of this ever-evolving story – the story of democracy in America.” https://museumonmainstreet.org/VoicesVotes

“When American revolutionaries waged a war for independence… They embraced a radical idea of establishing a government that entrusted the power of the nation not in a monarchy, but in its citizens. That great leap sparked questions that continue to impact Americans: Who has the right to vote, what are the freedoms and responsibilities of citizens and whose voices will be heard?”

THURSDAY - SATURDAY | 10AM-3PM OCTOBER 15 - NOVEMBER 21 |127 S MAIN STREETThe wide-open spaces of the former Robinson's building offer plenty of room to roam. Masks and social distancing will be required.
