In the Know with Osceola Chamber Main Street

Last Updated 12/16/2021

Who says small towns do not have big city attractions? Thanks to our many volunteers and sponsors, and Ivy Rose Boutique, The Smithsonian Traveling Museum is now open 10am-3pm, Thursday-Saturday, through November 14th.

“It seems to have been reserved to the people of this country…to decide…whether societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good government…” This quote from Alexander Hamilton, in The Federalist No.1, 1787, is one of the many reminders of how democracy was envisioned by the Founding Fathers.

There is no admission fee to the exhibition where there is plenty of room to roam through free-standing, interactive displays. Brush up on local history and snap a photo or two in front of the Women’s Suffrage pieces or in a historic voting booth.

The exhibits represent various topics about democracy and how it has worked through the years. This is a non-partisan historical display with no references of the current campaigns.

Set-up Volunteers: OCMS staff and board members: James Rutherford and Nicole Jacobson, and decorators, Tacy Cummings, Missy Cline, Mary Ellen Kimball, and Sarah and Bob Hettinger.

Thank you to the Clarke County Historic Society, Marie White, and Tawney Waske for loaning the voting booth and for all the information about notable Clarke County citizens.

Local citizens also shared their memorabilia. Former Clarke Elementary Teacher, Mike Boldon, has collected presential campaign buttons for decades. Although just a portion of his collection, his display represents 100 years of politics. Ann Diehl’s display illustrates several political topics, including campaign pieces representing her late husband and former Osceola Mayor, Fred Diehl.

In addition to the Main Street Iowa grant, these generous sponsors made this exhibit possible: Osceola Foods, Cactus Farms, Southwestern Community College, Clarke County Hospital, Clarke County Board of Supervisors and Hunsicker and Associates.

Holiday Brilliance/Shop Small: Let’s Make Osceola Shine!

Plans are well underway for this annual event and OCMS is promoting ‘Shop Small all through the Holiday season,” not just one day. Holiday Brilliance Activities are set for Saturday, November 28th.

The holiday season plan is to light up the town! With the help of volunteers, OCMS will create a sparkling courtyard, and community involvement will make Osceola shine.

OCMS asks everyone to decorate for the holidays, contact OCMS and your business or residence will be added to a map, just like the 4th of July route. All community light displays will kick-off November 28th.

Saturday, November 28th the downtown will be buzzing with activities designed to be safe while promoting entertainment. “Osceola Chamber Main Street is encouraging everyone to shop local over the holidays by making it simple, fun and rewarding to support our local businesses,” said Executive Director, Ashleigh Eckels. More details to come.
