Osceola175 - Honoring Community Service

Last Updated 2/2/2026Posted in Glimpses of the Past

Did you know one of Osceola’s most meaningful traditions began more than 75 years ago?

In 1950, the Community Service Award was established through a partnership between the Osceola Rotary Club and the Osceola Lions Club. The award was created to recognize individuals who gave service above and beyond their paid employment, those who quietly strengthened the community through dedication, leadership, and generosity.

The very first Community Service Award recipient was Charles D. Peret, who was serving as Osceola’s Mayor at the time. His recognition set the tone for what the award would come to represent: service rooted in purpose and a deep commitment to community.

Pictured above is an Osceola Sentinel article announcing the very first Community Service Award winner.

What began as a single moment of recognition grew into a lasting tradition. For 31 years, the award continued to be co-sponsored by the Rotary and Lions Clubs, celebrating the spirit of service that defines Osceola.

In 1981, the tradition evolved once again when the Osceola Rotary Club and the Osceola Chamber of Commerce joined together to co-sponsor the award, ensuring its legacy continued after the Lions Club stepped away. Today, the award is proudly co-sponsored by Osceola Chamber–Main Street and the Osceola Rotary Club.

More than seven decades later, the Community Service Award remains a reflection of Osceola’s heart, neighbors lifting neighbors, leaders leading with purpose, and a community that values giving back.
