Swing By the Pocket Park

Sometimes the best projects take time.

What began as a simple idea nearly five years ago has grown into one of downtown Osceola's newest gathering places. The Pocket Park on Jefferson Street is the result of community vision, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to creating spaces where people can connect, relax, and enjoy downtown.

At its core, the Pocket Park is a placemaking project, an effort to transform an underutilized space into a destination that encourages community engagement, supports local businesses, fosters outdoor dining, and creates opportunities for people to gather and make memories.

While visitors now see a finished space filled with art, lighting, seating, and a signature swing, the journey to get here happened one step at a time.

2021: The Dream Begins

The idea for a downtown Pocket Park first gained momentum in 2021.

At the time, we believed we had secured a location for the project and began developing plans for what the space could become. We envisioned a small gathering place that would add charm, encourage community interaction, and create a unique downtown destination.

Knowing the upcoming downtown infrastructure project would include permeable pavers, we planned to incorporate those improvements into the future park design and patiently waited for construction to begin.

Although plans were underway, the project was delayed and remained on hold until an opportunity arose to secure the space in 2024.

2024: The Foundation is Set

A major milestone occurred in 2024 when Hawkeye Medical Services deeded the greenspace adjacent to 144 W. Jefferson Street to Osceola Chamber Main Street after purchasing the building.

This generous donation provided the opportunity to turn a long-discussed vision into a real project and gave the community a space to begin imagining what could be possible.

2025: Bringing Art and Imagination to the Space

With the property secured, attention turned to transforming the space into a destination.

Osceola Chamber Main Street partnered with Kerr Family Dental to add a large-scale mural overlooking the future park. Painted by local artist Tacy Cummings, the mural brought color, creativity, and personality to the area while helping establish a sense of place.

At the same time, we began exploring ways to make the park interactive.

We knew we wanted more than just seating and landscaping. We wanted an experience.

That's when conversations with Altec began.

Together, we dreamed of creating a swing that would bring a little fun, a little charm, and a whole lot of memories to downtown Osceola. Thanks to Altec's incredible craftsmanship and community spirit, that vision became reality.

The signature swing now serves as the centerpiece of the park, a place where children can play, families can gather, and visitors can pause to enjoy a moment in downtown.

2026: Bringing the Vision to Life

As part of the downtown streetscape project, the City of Osceola installed permeable pavers throughout the Pocket Park area, creating an attractive and accessible foundation that connected seamlessly with the surrounding downtown improvements.

With the groundwork complete, Osceola Chamber Main Street added the finishing touches that transformed the area into a true gathering space.

Bistro seating was installed to encourage outdoor dining, conversations, and community connections.

Bistro lighting was added overhead, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere during the evening hours and adding another layer of charm to the space.

While a few additions are still ahead, it’s been incredibly rewarding to see the Pocket Park finally come to life after years of planning, partnerships, and perseverance.

Today, it stands as a reflection of what can happen when a community stays committed to a shared vision, even when the journey takes time.
